Our Cattle

The Side Step Dexters are a small breed of cattle originating from Ireland and known for their compact size, dual-purpose (dairy/beef) utility, and friendly demeanor. They are one of the smaller cattle breeds, with mature cows typically weighing between 600 to 800 pounds and bulls around 1,000 pounds. Dexter cattle are hardy, adaptable, and easy to manage, making them ideal for our scalable breeding and beef operation. Dexter cattle can live for 12-15 years or longer, making them an important investment for our farm.

These cattle have a calm temperament and traditionally come in three primary colors: red, black and dun. They are prized for their efficient feed conversion and their ability to thrive in various climates, including our colder Michigan environment, and are resistant to common diseases due to their robust immune systems.

Despite their small size, our Dexter cattle are productive. They produce rich, creamy A2/A2 milk, often preferred for making cheese and butter. Their meat is marbled, tender, and of high quality, making it sought after by gourmet chefs and locals.
